Lapis Light

Lapis Light is a floral composition that celebrates the quiet harmony of peonies growing together in the open air. Set against a rich lapis blue ground, each bloom occupies its own moment in the flowering season, from newly opened petals to blossoms at full maturity. The luminous blue backdrop recalls the depth of evening light, allowing the flowers to glow with unusual clarity while the painted vintage frame becomes part of the artwork itself, extending the colour beyond the picture plane. Delicate butterflies, only lightly suggested, invite a slower look, adding a gentle sense of movement to an otherwise still composition.

About the Painting

Unlike a floral portrait that focuses on a single bloom, Lapis Light explores the beauty that emerges when several peonies grow together. Each flower has its own character, colour and rhythm, yet they are united through the graceful movement of their stems and foliage.

The deep blue background was chosen to heighten the brilliance of the flowers rather than to represent a literal landscape. It creates a calm, atmospheric space in which the changing colours of the blossoms become the focus. The painted vintage frame continues this lapis blue beyond the painting itself, blurring the boundary between artwork and frame so they read as a single, considered piece.

The lightly drawn butterflies remain intentionally understated. Rather than dominating the composition, they reward careful observation and suggest the quiet life of a summer garden, where beauty often reveals itself gradually.

About the Flower(s)

Peonies have long been admired for their generosity of form and fleeting flowering season. In this composition they are shown at different stages of bloom, creating a natural sense of rhythm and balance rather than perfect symmetry.

The contrasting colours emphasise the individuality of each flower while celebrating the richness found within a single planting. Together they capture the abundance of early summer, when peonies briefly transform the garden before their petals fall. The painting reflects this moment of fullness, inviting the viewer to appreciate not only the beauty of each bloom, but also the harmony created by the group as a whole.

Process & Materials

Lapis Light was created using traditional ink and mineral pigments on a chalk paint primed vintage frame and board. The smooth, absorbent surface allows for the controlled layering of transparent colour, enabling subtle transitions within the petals and leaves while maintaining the fine line work characteristic of Gongbi painting.

Rather than treating the frame as a separate object, it was painted as an integral part of the composition. The continuous lapis blue unifies the artwork, creating a presentation in which the frame becomes an extension of the painting rather than simply its border.
