Known in English as Pink Hibiscus or sometimes Lotus, this cultivar is admired for its soft pink colouring, chrysanthemum-like form and strong garden character. This botanical study focuses on the fullness, delicacy and graceful structure of one of China’s distinctive pink tree peonies.
Botanical Observation

The flower of Rou Fu Rong has a generous, rounded presence. Its petals are soft pink, layered and slightly ruffled, creating a bloom that feels full without appearing heavy. The colour is gentle rather than dramatic, moving between deeper pink tones in the inner petals and lighter, more translucent pink towards the outer edges.

The flower form is especially important. Chinese sources describe Rou Fu Rong as chrysanthemum-form, sometimes showing proliferate or crown-like development. This gives the bloom a layered, gathered quality, with many shorter petals arranged around the centre. The golden stamens and green carpels remain visible within the flower, adding contrast and structure to the softness of the petals.

In this study, the focus is on the balance between abundance and restraint: the flower is rich in petals, yet still carries an airy elegance. The petals are thin, soft and slightly crinkled, with a purplish flush near the base. The flowers may face upright or slightly sideways and usually bloom in mid-season.

The plant is described as medium to tall, spreading in habit and vigorous, with good flower production and strong resilience. Specialist peony sources also note its tolerance of adverse conditions, including saline-alkaline soils, which reflects the robust character often valued in traditional Chinese tree peonies.
Process & Materials

Painted with ink and pigments on watercolour paper, this botanical study uses fine brushwork and layered colour to capture the soft fullness of Rou Fu Rong. The Gongbi-informed process allows the petals to be built gradually, preserving their delicate edges, subtle folds and tonal shifts within the pink.
