Botanical Observation

The flower opens with a remarkable sense of lightness. Broad, softly ruffled petals surround an open centre filled with golden stamens, allowing the flower's architecture to remain visible rather than concealed. The petals display a delicate shell pink that gradually fades towards the edges, while each petal is marked by a rich magenta flare radiating from its base. This dramatic contrast creates depth within the bloom and naturally draws the eye towards its centre.

The irregular, gently frilled petal margins give the flower a relaxed and expressive quality, allowing each bloom to develop its own individual character. Chinese tree peonies have been cultivated for well over a thousand years and represent one of the oldest ornamental flower traditions in the world. Luoyang, in Henan Province, has been recognised as the centre of Chinese tree peony cultivation since the Tang Dynasty and remains famous for preserving hundreds of historic cultivars.

Although this plant closely resembles several named cultivars, its original label has been lost and a definitive identification is no longer possible. Based on its flower form, petal structure, prominent magenta basal flares and overall growth habit, it appears most consistent with the traditional Luoyang group of Chinese tree peonies rather than a modern Japanese selection.

Its open flower form, softly ruffled petals and harmonious combination of pale pink and deep magenta reflect many of the characteristics that have made Chinese tree peonies admired for centuries, both as garden plants and as subjects in Chinese art.
Process & Materials

Painted with ink and pigments on watercolour paper, this botanical study combines the precision of traditional Gongbi painting with close botanical observation. Fine brushwork records the graceful movement of each petal, while successive transparent layers of pigment recreate the subtle transitions between shell pink, ivory and deep magenta.
