Paeonia'Garden Treasure' is an intersectional (Itoh) peony, a hybrid that combines the magnificent blooms and finely divided foliage of tree peonies with the strong stems and perennial growth habit of herbaceous peonies. One of the best-known yellow Itoh peonies, it is celebrated for its exceptionally large flowers, rich fragrance and outstanding garden performance. This botanical study explores the flower's radiant colour, elegant form and enduring appeal.
Botanical Observation

The flower opens in luminous golden yellow, with broad, gently ruffled petals surrounding a centre of bright golden stamens. Deep crimson flares radiate from the base of each petal, creating a striking contrast that draws the eye naturally towards the heart of the bloom. The balance between the warm yellow petals and the rich crimson markings gives the flower both vitality and elegance.

As the bloom matures, the yellow gradually softens to buttery cream while retaining its warmth. The semi-double flower form allows light to move freely through the petals, revealing subtle variations in tone and texture. This study focuses on preserving these changing colours while capturing the confident structure and generous scale that distinguish this remarkable cultivar.

Garden Treasure is one of the most celebrated intersectional peonies ever introduced. Bred by American hybridiser Don Hollingsworth, it combines the large flowers and elegant foliage of tree peonies with the strength and perennial habit of herbaceous peonies.

Its large semi-double blooms are renowned for their rich golden yellow colouring, prominent crimson flares and light fragrance. Numerous side buds extend the flowering season, while sturdy stems support the flowers without staking. Widely regarded as one of the finest yellow Itoh peonies, Garden Treasure received the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 1996 and continues to be admired by gardeners and collectors worldwide.
Process & Materials

Painted with ink and pigments on watercolour paper, this botanical study combines the precision of traditional Gongbi painting with careful botanical observation. Fine brushwork records the elegant structure of each petal, while successive transparent layers of pigment recreate the subtle transitions between luminous yellow, buttery cream and deep crimson. Particular attention is given to preserving the flower's radiant colour and balanced form.
