Paeonia 'Hillary' is an intersectional (Itoh) peony, a hybrid that combines the magnificent blooms and finely divided foliage of tree peonies with the strong stems and perennial growth habit of herbaceous peonies. Celebrated for its remarkable colour transformation and abundant flowering, this award-winning cultivar displays an ever-changing palette of rose pink, coral, apricot and creamy yellow. Botanical Observation

The changing colours of Hillary make every flower unique. Newly opened blooms emerge in rich rose pink with warm coral tones before gradually softening through apricot to creamy yellow as they mature. During flowering, blooms at different stages often appear together on the same plant, creating a remarkable tapestry of colour.

The large semi-double flowers are composed of broad, gently ruffled petals that surround a luminous centre of golden stamens. The petals catch the light beautifully, revealing subtle tonal shifts that give the flower both depth and movement. The blooms typically measure 15 to 20 cm across and are carried on strong, upright stems that rarely require staking. Numerous side buds extend the flowering period, while the finely divided foliage remains attractive long after flowering has finished. Its outstanding garden performance and extraordinary range of colours have earned Hillary widespread recognition, including the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 2019.
Process & Materials

Painted with ink and pigments on watercolour paper, this botanical study combines the precision of traditional Gongbi painting with careful botanical observation. Fine brushwork records the elegant structure of each petal, while successive transparent layers of pigment recreate the subtle transitions between rose pink, coral, apricot and creamy yellow. Particular attention is given to preserving the flower's changing colours, allowing the painting to reflect both its botanical character and its remarkable vitality.
