Paeonia 'Sonoma Velvet Ruby'

Paeonia 'Sonoma Velvet Ruby' is an intersectional (Itoh) peony, a hybrid that combines the magnificent blooms and finely divided foliage of tree peonies with the strong stems and perennial growth habit of herbaceous peonies. Renowned for its exceptionally rich ruby-red flowers and vigorous growth, this modern cultivar is admired for both its dramatic colour and refined flower form. This botanical study celebrates the depth, luminosity and elegance of one of the finest red intersectional peonies.

Botanical Observation

The flowers open in a saturated ruby red, with broad, gently ruffled petals arranged around a luminous centre of golden stamens. At the base of each petal, darker crimson flares intensify the depth of colour and naturally draw the eye towards the heart of the bloom. Unlike many red peonies that fade rapidly, the petals retain remarkable richness while gradually developing softer crimson and wine-red tones as they mature.

The semi-double flower form creates an elegant balance between openness and fullness. Light passing across the velvety petals reveals subtle variations of ruby, crimson and burgundy, giving the bloom movement and vitality. This study focuses on preserving those shifting tones while recording the flower's strong yet graceful structure.

About the Flower

Introduced: 2003

Botanical Name: Paeonia 'Sonoma Velvet Ruby'

Type: Intersectional (Itoh) peony (Parentage: Martha W. × Sonoma Sun)

Origin: United States

Sonoma Velvet Ruby is one of a distinguished series of intersectional peonies developed by American hybridiser Don R. Smith. It is admired for its rich ruby-red flowers, vigorous growth and reliable flowering habit. The large semi-double blooms are carried on strong stems above finely divided foliage that remains attractive throughout the growing season.

Like many outstanding Itoh peonies, the plant produces numerous side buds, extending the flowering period and allowing blooms at different stages to be enjoyed simultaneously. Its combination of exceptional colour, sturdy habit and refined flower form has made it a favourite among collectors and specialist growers.

Process & Materials

Painted with ink and pigments on watercolour paper, this botanical study combines the precision of traditional Gongbi painting with close botanical observation. Fine brushwork records the elegant structure of each petal, while successive transparent layers of pigment recreate the rich transitions between ruby red, crimson and burgundy. Particular attention is given to preserving the velvety quality of the petals and the luminous centre of the bloom.
